Hyderabad Boreddy Ayodhya Reddy, spokesperson of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC), on Tuesday said that the Kaleshwaram irrigation project turned out to be useless project as farmers failed to get any water from it despite lack of rains this season.

“Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao keeps praising about Kaleshwaram project at all the meetings. But farmers in his own constituency, Gajwel, are not able to sow seeds as there are no rains so far this season. Where the waters from the KCR’s pet project have gone?” he asked, stating that farmers in Siddipet and other parts of Telangana are facing similar problem despite tall claims by BRS about irrigation projects it undertook.

He also questioned as to why more number of farmers in Telangana are using borewells when the government constructed irrigation projects. “When Telangana State was formed, it had just 19.3 lakh electricity connections for borewells. The number has increased to 27.49 lakh. Why more and more farmers are going for borewells when there is water from Kaleshwaram project?” he pointed out.

Speaking at a press conference here, he allegedthat the BRS government spent Rs 83,000 crore on Kaleshwaram project, but all the funds went into drain. “BRS leaders benefitted from Kaleshwaram, not the farmers,” he alleged.

“The BJP leaders, who are calling Kaleshwaram as an ATM for the KCR family, have not taken any action. We provided evidence, but no action was taken,” TPCC Spokesperson pointed out.
